In 2020, we received funding from The National Lottery Community Fund to develop a Young People’s Hub at the base in Beeches Road, Loughborough. Young volunteers will be able to take part in a range of water-based educational, environmental and heritage projects, gaining new experiences, learning new skills and having fun. While enjoyable, the young people will gain greater confidence, self-belief and important collaboration skills.
We will be rolling out educational, heritage, environmental and creative projects for local young people on the local waterways and at our base in Loughborough.
Watch out for exciting updates over the coming months, along with ways you can become involved.
We met Angie at PLMT through a referral of one of her young volunteers onto our Prince's Trust Team Programme last year. She then organised for our young people to come down to the Trust and complete their qualification. We are keeping this going every year now for our teams in Loughborough and Coalville. Our young people meet us at the Trust in June and we were also able to bring a team from Coalville last year. The young people absolutely love being there; they gain so much knowledge, not just of how to tie many knots etc but about self-awareness, resilience and that they have so many more skills than they think. I have seen the young people thrive in this environment, completing tasks they would have never thought they were capable of and building up so much belief in themselves that, in some cases, they've never had before. One of our young people, from our Loughborough team, is now working as an LSA at Homefield College. She is loving her role and is being trained as an LSA, but they want to further train her to become a tutor as they see her potential. Another young person achieved a part time job in Tesco, which I believe is now full time. One is volunteering with the Salvation Army. I believe the combination of the Prince's Trust programme and volunteering for PLMT helped the young people achieve these work opportunities. Prior to the course, they had little self esteem and confidence, and most of them couldn't see themselves in the workplace. It's fantastic that our young people have to been able to access this opportunity with the Trust and we wish all our teams could benefit from it. We are very much looking forward to working with PLMT in the future. This will happen in June and October 2023 with our Loughborough and Coalville Teams.
